ŠKODA ELECTRIC WILL DELIVER 50 TROLLEYBUSES TO RIGA IN LATVIA
Plzeň-based Škoda Electric will produce fifty new modern trolleybuses for Riga, the capital city of Latvia. This is part of a framework contract for a total of 125 vehicles. The Plzeň-based company continues the previous deliveries of an equally large fleet of these eco-friendly vehicles from previous years.
„In 2013, we signed a contract for the delivery of a total of 125 trolleybuses for Riga. Under the contract, Škoda will supply 27Tr low-floor articulated trolleybuses worth 2.6 billion CZK for the Latvian metropolis. The contract includes the possibility of exercising an option for another 38 trolleybuses,“ says Petr Kasenčák, head of the business department of the Plzeň-based company. The Škoda vehicles are equipped with an auxiliary diesel generator designed for driving outside the traction line. „The vehicles are also equipped with air conditioning and a modern information system, including a device for detecting the number of passengers,“ adds Petr Kasenčák.
Škoda Electric, which is a member of the Škoda Transportation group, won the tender announced in 2013 by the Riga-based transportation company (Rigas Satiksme). The tender also included the securement of financing (a gradual repayment of the vehicle supply over a period of eight years). Therefore, Česká spořitelna and Exportní garanční a pojišťovací společnost (Export Guarantee Insurance Corporation), which are involved in financing the whole project, have a large share in the success of Škoda.
The Riga-based transport company now operates nineteen trolleybus lines and annually transports 45 million passengers. It has 267 trolleybuses in its fleet. In Riga, Škoda trolleybuses have been popular for decades. The first vehicles were delivered to Riga back in 1955. The current Škoda Electric contract follows the 150 low-floor Škoda 24 Tr trolleybuses, which were delivered in the period of 2007-2009.
