Revitalization of the Škoda premises
Since 2004 the Škoda premises in Plzeň have undergone large revitalization with the aim of bringing the traditional industrial area of the city back to life. In recent years Škoda Transportation has built three new production halls, one administrative building and opened the first part of the Science Centre Techmania. In 2013 the new 3D planetariumwas opened and the 5th gate was relocated and re-built in order to provide a free access to the Techmania from the city.
The trial track which is used by Škoda Transportation on its premises in Plzeň has also undergone modernizing. Thanks to this it will be possible in future to increase the number of testing drives which test, for example, the functionality or other parameters of vehicles. The trial track has been newly equipped with facilities for measuring the noise level of vehicles, a shelter for facilitating access to the equipment on vehicle roofs and a water curtain point where trial technicians and other professionals can now try to simulate demanding weather conditions and test the resistance of vehicles.
The revitalization of the Škoda premises includes new Lay-By and Repair Works of the PMDP (Plzeň City Transport Company)of an area of 11.6 ha. There are, for example, halls for servicing of vehicles, washing facilities, a paint shop and two lay-by areas – a roofed lay-by area for trolleybuses and an outdoor lay-by for the parking of buses. In the near future the capacity of the depot will make it possible to locate there up to 175 bus vehicles and 136 trolleybus vehicles.
A part of the premises is also currently being used by students – the University of West Bohemia has been using the building of former Škoda’s headquarters in the street Tylova to meet the needs of the Faculty of Health Care Studies and Faculty of Economics.
