ŠKODA ELECTRIC WILL SUPPLY DRIVES FOR GIANT MINING VEHICLES
Plzeň-based Škoda Electric and Russian company Sibelektroprivod will supply electric drives for giant mining vehicles, the final manufacturer of which will be Belarusian company Belaz. The Novosibirsk company Sibelektroprivod is a sister company of Škoda Transportation, which includes Škoda Electric. The result of the cooperation will be vehicles with a capacity of 90 tons, which are used in surface coal, ore and diamond mines, especially in the Siberian part of Russia.
„The delivery of the first sets of traction engines and converters is planned for the first quarter of 2018,“ says Škoda Electric Managing Director Jaromír Šilhánek, adding that the main increase in production should start in 2019.
Škoda Electric, a traditional manufacturer of vehicles and complete drives for public transport, is presenting itself as a producer of mining equipment with this new contract again. In the past, it has worked on the production of such vehicles with American company Caterpillar. In recent years Škoda has supplied hundreds of engines for giant mining vehicles for the American customer. In the case of deliveries for Belaz, however, Škoda Electric and Sibelektroprivod will supply a complete electric drive including traction converters and a generator.
In relation to the new contract for Belaz, Škoda Electric faced a number of technical challengers. „Mining vehicles are also used in service temperatures below minus 50°C, and they must be able to withstand great amounts of dust, which is common in surface mines. We must therefore develop and deliver a drive that fully meets the customer's demanding requirements,“ says Škoda Electric Specialist Viktor Vachata. In addition to Russia, there are many countries around the world that are interested in mining vehicles with a capacity of 90 tons, such as South America, Africa and Australia.
